Shriners Raising Money For Kids And Vets

A volunteer that was locked up for charity on Friday at the Shriners “Jail and Bail”.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – When a reserve deputy arrives and puts you in cuffs…most people get worried. On Friday, they smiled and played along as they were put into the Shriners paddy-wagon to raise money to help support the hospitals for children.

Bank Iowa once again was the host of the festivities Friday. Lunch was grilled up by Mahaska County Pork Producers, from 10:30am to 2pm. The meal included a choice of soda or water, chips and of course the pork burger, all for a donation to the Shriners.

A popular event is the “Jail and Bail”, and having an individual locked up.

Tim Murry spoke about the fundraiser being hosted by the Mahaska County Shrine Club called “Jail and Bail.” Funds were raised by those volunteers who got locked up in the “Keystone Cops” truck. They would have to solicit donations in order to get ‘bailed’ out.

The money raised goes to help support the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Something that has recently happened is that the Shriners hospital will begin inviting “picked” wounded soldiers from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars to receive their medical treatment at the hospitals. Such soldiers as those with burns or amputees needing the necessary prosthetic’s to enable their recovery.

This agreement between Shriners Hospital and the Federal Government happened in the last 5 months says Murry. “There’s no cost to the vets families for it,” Murry added.

The Shriners hospital will recover some expenses for care from the federal government.
