Shirley Ann Reed, 80, of Cedar, died Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born Monday, October 26, 1936, near Sandyville, Iowa, the daughter of Willard and Hilda Leathers Cowman.

On September 19, 1954, Shirley was united in marriage to Melvin Reed at the Fremont Baptist Church in Fremont.

Shirley was a homemaker and a farm wife her whole life where she raised her family.

Shirley attended Wright Union Church and Fremont Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, making floral arrangements for decorating the cemetery, baking pies with her sisters, playing bingo, cards and games with her family and friends and writing letters and cards. Melvin and Shirley enjoyed winter camping in Texas. She cherished time with her children and grandchildren most of all.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 63 years, Melvin Reed of Cedar; her son, Ron (& Becky) Reed of Fremont; her daughter, Rhonda (& David) Simms of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren: Brad Simms, Angie Simms, Derrick (& Megan) Simms, Jessica Reed (& fiancé Isaac Brehmer), Megan (& Brian) Powell and Caitlin (& Justin) Oilar; five great grandchildren: Liam, Clayton, Emersyn, Hadley and Taya; and a sister, Betty Handy of Oskaloosa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Bradley Scott Reed; two sisters: Doris Cowman and Lucille Sheeley; and two brothers: Kenneth and Jerald Cowman.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 22, 2017, at 10 A.M. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel with Pastor Robb Bruns officiating.
Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa.
Visitation will begin Thursday after 1 P.M. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Thursday from 5 – 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Fremont Baptist Church or to the MHP Hospice Serenity House.
