Seddon Snatches Four Titles During Busy Weekend

Waverly/Dubuque–Derek Seddon (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) was unbeatable over the weekend as the men’s indoor track and field team competed in two meets Friday and Saturday.

WPU lost what turned into a dual at the Wartburg Relays by a score of 315-76, and then placed sixth out of 11 teams with 37 points at the Dubuque Sol Butler Classic. Augustana (Ill.) claimed the crown with 150.5 points.

Seddon opened his weekend with two event wins at Wartburg, throwing the best shot put at 49-11.25 and the leading weight throw at 53-11.

Kalob Gist (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) was right behind Seddon in the shot put at 47-1, while a runner-up finish also came from long jumper Joshua Rankin (Sr., University Park, Ill., Sociology) at 19-4.75.

Malik Brown (So., Long Beach, Calif.) tallied two top-10 efforts, placing fifth in the 60-meter dash (7.40 seconds) and seventh in the 200 (24.17 seconds). Tyler Albert (Fr., Eldon, Iowa) claimed bronze in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.45 seconds.

Seddon was even stronger in his two titles in Dubuque, upping his shot put to 50-6.25 and his weight throw to 54-6.

The 4×400-meter relay group was fourth in a time of 3:28.36, while 400-meter dash runners Neiman Thompson (Sr., Rockville, Md., Physical Education) was sixth (51.39 seconds) and Stepfon Williams (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., Industrial Technology) was 10th (52.27). Chris Gossett (Sr., Park Forest, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) had the seventh-best triple jump of the day at 40-5.

“The team faced a lot of adversity today, but managed to keep their heads and put together a solid showing overall,” Head Coach Allen Friesen said. “I am very proud of all of them.”

Next Up: William Penn returns to Waverly next Saturday to compete in Wartburg’s Chelsey M. Henkenius Open.
