Sammons Earns First Career Honor, Taylor Collects Third

Oskaloosa–Lacey Taylor (Sr., Cedar, Iowa, Elementary Education) and Dayna Sammons (So., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Software Engineering) were tabbed for last week’s efforts as the Midwest Collegiate Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honors were announced today.

Taylor was named MCC Player of the Week for the third time in her career (first in 2012), while Sammons received her first-ever MCC Setter of the Week laurel. The awards are the first for William Penn this fall.

The duo helped the Lady Statesmen (16-6) to a perfect 6-0 week, highlighted by a title at the Knox Tournament. Both were selected to the all-tournament squad.

Taylor posted 61 kills (2.90 per game) last week with a .306 attack percentage. She also had ten aces, 65 digs, and six blocks (all assists). The senior outside hitter recorded her best outing against St. Mary (Neb.) Tuesday with 14 kills (.364 attack %) and 17 digs. She posted two double-doubles (kills and digs) on the week.

For Sammons, she managed 180 assists (8.57 per game) in addition to 17 kills (.421 attack %), 16 aces, 48 digs, and two blocks (one solo, one assist). The sophomore recorded 41 assists in Saturday’s win over Lincoln Christian (Ill.) and torched York (Neb.) Tuesday by tying a school single-match mark with seven aces.

For the year, Taylor is pacing William Penn with 240 kills (.320 attack %) and also has 37 aces, 227 digs, and 29 blocks (three solos, 26 assists). Sammons has assisted on 689 winners and also leads the navy and gold with 46 aces. She has been a force at the net, both offensively (41 kills, team-best .349 attack %) and defensively (16 blocks–four solos, 12 assists). A total of 224 attacks have been dug by Sammons.
