(John) Roy Moore, 93, of Oskaloosa, and formerly of Fremont and Cedar, died Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa.
Roy was born March 21, 1921, at Wright, Iowa, the son of Laurence and Josie Havens Moore.
Roy was inducted into the United States Army on October 3, 1942 at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He served as a member of the 753rd Tank Battalion 3rd Platoon. On the morning of December 11, 1943, Roy was wounded at Mt. Casino, between Rome and Naples. On January 20, 1945, he was honorably discharged from the Army. He earned a Purple Heart, a Service Ribbon, a Bronze Star and a Good Conduct Medal. Following his discharge he returned to Iowa.
On May 1, 1946, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Vander Linden at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa. Early on Roy worked at Fitch & Company in Oskaloosa. He later opened his own garage and worked as a mechanic until his retirement.
Roy was a member of the D.A.V. and the N.R.A.
His family includes his wife of over 67 years, Dorothy Moore of Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband: Ann and Leo Veldhuizen of Eddyville; two grandsons: Randy (Kim) Veldhuizen of Oskaloosa and Robert (Jill) Veldhuizen of Eddyville; six great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; three brothers in law; five sisters in law; and many nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Laurence “Jr.” Moore; a sister, Alma Andrews; six brothers in law, and four sisters in law.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 8, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Mark Doland officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Graveside Military Honors will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
Visitation will begin Wednesday morning after 10 a.m. and continue until 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bates Funeral Chapel.
Visitation will resume at 8:30 on Thursday morning, the family will be at the funeral chapel from 12 noon until service time at 2 p.m.
