Robert E. Rutherford, age 96, of Sigourney and formerly of Rose Hill, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at the Manor House in Sigourney, Iowa. He was born on March 16, 1928, the son of Albert and Leota (DeMoney) Rutherford in rural Rose Hill.

Robert a.k.a. “Bob” attended Spring Valley Country School until the 8th grade.

Bob was drafted into the United States Army and served in Korea during the Korean War. He was later honorably discharged after wartime had ended.

Bob never married, he worked construction most of his life until retiring in the 1980’s.

Bob loved fishing, hunting, trapping, gardening and had a love for his dogs. During his younger years, he liked to own a new pickup truck every two years. Bob was a member of the American Legion.

Robert is survived by a brother, Richard Rutherford of Barnes City and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Evelyn A. Rutherford Kauffman and her husband Fred; a sister-in-law Sharon K. Williams Rutherford and an infant brother, Lloyd Rutherford.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, April 8, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at the Indianapolis Cemetery in Mahaska County with pastor Molly Goodrich officiating. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be held at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Monday, April 8 beginning at 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. with Bob’s family present to greet relatives and guests.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Keokuk County or Stephens Memorial Animal Shelter.
