Richard Wellington Montgomery, 78, of Oskaloosa, passed away surrounded by his family at the MHP Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born January 3, 1939, in Oskaloosa, the son of Ralph and Mary Comstock Montgomery.

Richard attended country school in Mahaska County and later Oskaloosa High School.

Following school Richard went to work on the family farm east of Oskaloosa. After several years on the farm, Richard moved to Oskaloosa and opened R&R Auto, he owned and operated that service station in Oskaloosa until he sold the business in the mid 1970’s. Last, he drove semi over the road for a few years. Throughout his working life, Richard worked repairing and restoring old cars, for himself, friends and customers.

In 1958, he was united in marriage to Norma VanVeen. To this union four children were born. Richard and Norma later divorced. He later married Phyllis Sheeley. To this union a son was born. Phyllis and Richard later divorced. He was then married to Sally Shafer, she died in 1995.

Richard’s passion was working on and restoring old cars. He was very talented at doing body work and he looked forward to teaching his craft to the next generation. He also drove a stock car at area dirt tracks for a few years.

His family includes his wife of over 20 years, Mary Rumbaugh of Oskaloosa; four children and their spouses: Kim (& Bob) Lockard of Oskaloosa, Kelly (& Justin) Van Der Veer of Oskaloosa, Kerry (& Jerrie) Sims of Oskaloosa, and Erin (& Lori) Montgomery of Ottumwa; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; three step sons and their families: Al (& Stephanie) Stainbrook, Quinton Ritter, and Robert (& Lisa) Nelson; four sisters: Joellen (& Chuck) Ehlm of Creston, Irene Fuller of DeWitt, Iowa, Judy Mitchell of Oskaloosa, and Marva (& Larry) Terpstra of Oskaloosa; a brother, Jerry (& Sonya) Montgomery of New Sharon; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Sally; a son, Kevin Montgomery; a great grandson, Travis, Jr.; a brother, John Montgomery; and a brother in law, Les Mitchell.

As was Richard’s wish his body has been cremated. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
A graveside memorial service and burial will be held Saturday, August 26, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. in the Bloomfield Cemetery east of Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
A procession will form at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bates Funeral Chapel for those wishing to attend the service.
Visitation will begin Friday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel Friday evening from 5-7 to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Richard Montgomery Memorial Fund.
