Richard J. Hart, 88, of Oskaloosa died Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa.

Richard was born Friday, December 19, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Michael and Wilma Slinker Hart.

Richard attended high school in Saginaw, Michigan where, at the age of 13, he became the state tennis table champion. He then studied Latin at Western Michigan University. After college he joined the Navy serving as a radio operator during WWII.

On July 15, 1951, Richard was united in marriage to Joyce Gifford in Saginaw, Michigan. He worked as an insurance claims manager in the Oskaloosa area for most of his working life.

Richard enjoyed ham radio, even having his own radio tower at his home and was the first person to ever work all 50 states on two meters. He was an avid tennis player, playing even into his 80’s. He also enjoyed watching old westerns, republic serials, and listening to music.

His family includes his wife; Joyce Hart of Oskaloosa; two sons; Kelly (Marilyn) Hart of Windsor Heights, and Sterling Hart of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held Friday, November 8, 2013, at 1:30 P.M. at the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont with Father Charles Fladung officiating.
Interment: To be conducted at a later date.
Memorials may be made in his name.
