OSKALOOSA, IA — Monsters, figures that alternately scare us and delight our imaginations, are the subject of local artist Sarah Kargol’s exhibit at the George Daily Auditorium. A reception to celebrate her work will be on Friday, February 28th from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. People are invited to come view the exhibit, talk to the artist, and enjoy refreshments.

According to Sarah, monsters are a universal subject matter. Everyone has one monster-like quality or another. Her monsters seem non-threatening yet cynical. The narrative that exists is often humorous, dark, sublime, youthful, and nostalgic all at the same time. Sarah’s paintings evolve from materials that have past lives – buttons, fabric, and recycled images that bring a sense of nostalgia to her work. By manipulating these materials and introducing them to ideas from pop culture, she gives them a new, unexpected, and often humorous life, more exciting and interesting than was originally intended.

A mixed-media artist, Kargol is a mother who is busily engaged in raising four young boys. They are major sources of inspiration; their daily antics, speech, and curiosity all drive her to create. She paints at night when the children are sleeping, when things are quiet and the creative process really takes off. The boys love to wake up and see what new creations have been born in the night. Sarah currently lives with her husband, Matt, and their four sons in Oskaloosa.

Sarah Kargol’s work will be up at the George Daily Auditorium through the end of March.
