Quartet Garner All-Heart Accolades

Oskaloosa–Four members of the Statesmen women’s volleyball program were recognized for exceptionable campaigns as the 2021 all-Heart of America Athletic Conference teams were announced Tuesday.

Corrin Lepper (Sr., Jefferson City, Mo., Exercise Science) and Alyssa Young (Jr., Winter Springs, Fla., Biology) were chosen for the 14-member second team, while Alyvia Johnson (Fr., Owatonna, Minn., Elementary Education) was one of 14 individuals picked for the third squad. Alicia Jaquez (Sr., Farmington, N.M., Biology) earned one of 17 honorable mentions.

The award is the third in Lepper’s career (also a second-teamer in 2019), while Jaquez notched her second career honorable mention. Young and Johnson are both first-team recipients.

The foursome guided William Penn to an 18-12 overall record, including an 11-8 mark in the Heart and an appearance in the Heart Tournament Quarterfinals.

Lepper was a force on both ends, posting 230 kills (2.32 per set) with 83 blocks (0.84 per set). She hit .259 overall with an additional 22 digs, four assists, and three aces.

The junior’s campaign was headlined by a 19-kill performance against Rocky Mountain on September 10. She posted seven double-digit kill outings and managed a season-high eight blocks versus Grand View on September 21.

Lepper ranked fifth in the league in blocks per set and sixth in conference-only matches with 60 blocks.

Young was also a dual net threat with 172 kills (1.83 per set) and a team-high 88 blocks (0.94 per set). In addition to hitting .226, the junior managed 32 digs, nine assists, and four aces.

She recorded four double-digit kill showings and finished with a season-best eight blocks against Mount Mercy on September 14. Young was third in the conference in blocks per set and ninth in total blocks.

Johnson was WPU’s most prolific hitter with 276 kills (2.97 per set), while also being strong on defense with 215 digs (2.31 per set). She hit .135 overall with 44 blocks, 12 assists, and nine aces.

The freshman eclipsed double-digit kills on 17 occasions with a high of 16 versus Park on September 24. She also posted seven double-doubles with a season-best 27 digs in a matchup with Mount Mercy on October 5.

She ranked 10th in the Heart in kills per set, while in conference-only bouts, she was ninth with 186 kills.

Jaquez was a steady contributor, finishing third for WPU with 184 kills (1.98 per set) on a .156 attack clip. She also tallied 45 digs, 18 blocks, and five assists.

The senior ended the campaign with seven double-digit kill outings, including a high of 17 against William Woods on September 4.

Nada Meawad of Park headlined the league’s top honorees list as she was named Heart Player and Attack of the Year. Setter of the Year laurels went to Marea Wortmann of Benedictine, while Evangel’s Eryn Russell claimed Defender of the Year accolades. Allisyn Frank (Baker) and Hailey Hested (Mount Mercy) shared Freshman of the Year honors. On the coaching side, Michael Talamantes of Park collected the Heart Coach of the Year, while Garrett Case of Central Methodist was tabbed as Assistant Coach of the Year.
