Pie Bakers & Pedal Tractor Pullers Needed

Main Street’s Sweet Corn Serenade

Mark your calendars for Thursday, July 27th! Main Street’s 30th Annual Sweet Corn Serenade in downtown Oskaloosa will be the place for you. It will be a day packed with food, music by Marshall County Hangmen, kids’ crafts & games, a craft & product show, contests and MORE. There is fun for the whole family.

The craft show and food vendors begin at noon. Sweet Corn, Mahaska County Cattleman’s beef burgers, Jaarsma Bakery pies and ice cream will be served from 4 to 9 pm. The musical entertainment begins at 5:30 pm by the Marshall County Hangmen –followed by the very popular Municipal Band at 8:00.

Pie bakers are needed for the pie-baking contest. There is no monetary entry fee for the pie baking contest—simply bring one pie to be judged and a second pie as your entry fee–no cream pies for the judging, please. Get those recipes out and start baking. Plan to bring your pies to the bandstand in the Square at 5:00 pm, with the contest beginning at 5:30. Osky Cash prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places totaling $75.

Entertainment this year is sponsored by Bank Iowa of Oskaloosa! The Marshall County Hangmen play a unique and fun blend of classic honky-tonk, rockabilly, and rhythm and blues along with their southern tinged versions of rock classics and originals. They have been performing regularly for many events and venues including the Iowa State Fair, Meskwaki Casino, the annual Blessing of the Bikes festival, Boji Bay Pavilion, Smokin’ in the Junction BBQ festival, and a host of other venues across Iowa. The Marshall County Hangmen are a professional, unique, and entertaining band that really engages with their audience and will make for great entertainment at Sweet Corn Serenade.

Children’s activities & games will be in full supply this year and at no cost! Community 1st Credit Union will be providing Train Rides. The YMCA is going to conduct children’s crafts, and there will also be giant slide provided by Gateway Nazarene and a Farm Bureau Agriculture Exhibit. Besides all of these great attributes, Tom Terrific the Balloon Man will be roaming the park entertaining children with his magic touch. Enter your kids into the Hawkeye Pedal Pull contest sponsored by McKim Tractor Service, American Family Insurance and DuraCrop. All children are welcome from ages 3-11. Register from 5:30 to 6:00. Competition begins at 6:00. With all this free entertainment, Oskaloosa Main Street hopes to see great crowds of people enjoying Sweet Corn Serenade.

All of this fun and excitement could not be possible without bushels of volunteers. Raise your stalks to all of the area businesses, service groups, and countless individuals that make Sweet Corn Serenade an event to look forward to every year. Also needed are those who would like to enter the children’s pedal tractor pull sponsored by McKim Tractors and DuraCrop. Children ages 3 – 11 must register between 5:30 and 6:00 pm with the pull beginning at 6 pm.
