Phyllis Jayne Hillyer
January 4, 1940 – July 1, 2016
What Cheer, Iowa | Age 76
Phyllis Hillyer, 76, of Oskaloosa died Friday, July 1, 2016 at the Mahaska Health Partnership. Phyllis Jayne Hillyer was born January 4, 1940, the daughter of Clarence and Elizabeth Carter Sparks.
Phyllis was a 1958 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. That same year Phyllis gave birth to the first of eight daughters and a son.
As one would image Phyllis absolutely adored children. After raising her own she was more the willing to become Grandma.
On April 4, 1984 Phyllis was united in marriage to Ray Dean Hillyer.
She enjoyed crocheting, reading and anything involving children. By no measure did Phyllis live an easy life. Even though her children wore bread sacks to keep the feet dry and warm in the winter, they never went without, even when it met she did. Phyllis taught her children to work hard, be honest and make their own way in life.
Phyllis is survived by her nine children: Beth (& Gary) Purdy of What Cheer, Rebecca (& Jim) Mathewson of Lake St. Louis, MO, Barbara (& Robert) Davis of Ottumwa, Paulette Schneider of Oskaloosa, Chris Ryals of Richland, Ray (& Serena) Ryals of What Cheer, Loretta (& Carroll) Beck of Oskaloosa, Terri (& John) Gilbert of Knoxville and Cynthia (& Brian) Recor of Oskaloosa. She also leaves behind many grandchildren and great grand children.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Ray Dean Hillyer.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, July, 24, 2016 at the Friendship Cemetery in Crawford, Missouri.
No Visitation is planned.
