Philip Jay Paxton passed away June 23, 2013 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Ottumwa.

Phil was born September 27, 1925 near Ollie, Iowa in Keokuk County, to David and Edythe (Sonner) Paxton. He graduated from Hedrick High School in 1943. Phil served in the United States Army during World War II. He managed the Benteco Store in Hedrick, owned and operated a donut shop in Marshalltown and worked for John Deere Ottumwa for 30 Years.

Phil was a member of Ollie Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee and on the Diaconate Board. He was a member of the American Legion Post #83 of Hedrick, a member of the Hedrick Lions and Fremont Lions. He married Mary Louise Williams on June 5, 1943 in Lancaster, Missouri. He enjoyed country living, raising cattle, fishing, camping and hunting. Most of all he loved being with his family.

Phil is survived by his wife of 70 years Mary Louise, daughters; Marilyn (Larry) Anton of Carrollton, TX, and Judy (Rick) Grooms of Ottumwa, sons; Allen Paxton of Hedrick, Stan (LuAnn) Paxton of Eldridge, IA, and Dennis (Kristi) Paxton of Cedar Falls, IA. Eleven grandchildren; Bob (Michelle) Schertz, Bryan (Brenda) Schertz, Chris (Johanna) Goodwin, Joe (Tracy) Goodwin, P.J. Paxton, Coby Paxton, Aaron (Misty) Nolan, Eric (Lisa) Paxton, Jenny (Christopher) Green, Schuyler (Abbey) Paxton, Lauren Paxton. Three step-grandchildren; Chad (Jehan) Anton, Michael (Samantha) Grooms, Todd (Megan) Grooms. Eleven great-grandchildren; Jordyn (Steven) Hughes, Whitley Schertz, Taylor Schertz, Ashley Goodwin, Madison Goodwin, Sage Goodwin, Garrett Goodwin, Addyson Green, Emma Green, Peyton Paxton, Isla Nolan. Ten step-great grandchildren; Kiev Anton, Fiona Anton, Novak Anton, Paige Grooms, Navy Grooms, Macy Grooms, Elizabeth Grooms, Jack Grooms, Tanner Jones and Alek Smith. Three great-great grandchildren; Lylah Hughes, Kallan Goodwin, Allyson Lewis. Brother-in-law Gene (Joyce) Williams, sister-in-laws: Louise Paxton and Marian Paxton, and several nieces and nephews that he loved.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother David Paxton, brothers; Merritt Paxton and Loyal Roop, sisters; Letha Roop and Patricia Paxton.

Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon Thursday, June 27 at the Fremont Funeral Chapel with family present to greet family and friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 28, at 1:00 P.M. at the Ollie Baptist Church in Ollie, Iowa.
Burial will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa. Military honors will be presented by the Arendt Bolin Stubbs Post #83 of Hedrick.
Memorials may be made to Keokuk County Fire and Rescue or Wapello County Hospice.
