Pedestrian Injured In Accident On South Market

Emergency personnel investigate the scene of a car versus pedestrian accident on South Market Tuesday evening.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – One person was injured when they were apparently struck by a car in the 700 block of South Market on Tuesday evening.

Oskaloosa Police Lt. Gary McClun said that when officers arrived on the scene, they found a male who had been struck by a vehicle.

McClun said the male was transported to Mahaska Health Partnership. The pedestrian’s injuries were unknown at the scene, but an air ambulance had been summoned to transport him to another facility.

McClun said that field sobriety tests were conducted on the driver, Charles Pearson, to determine if alcohol was a factor. Pearson was driving a black 1984 Ford Mustang, which according to the accident report was traveling southbound on South Market, after turning from 6th Avenue West.

Pearson told officers he did not see the pedestrian, identified as Wayne Luckey. Pearson said his car was in 1st gear and didn’t believe he had even made it to 10 mph by the time the accident happened.

Pearson was screened for alcohol and drugs through sobriety testing, and was cleared of being impaired at the time of the accident.

The report states the pedestrian had a breath alcohol content of .103 on the PBT. His injuries included a severe laceration to his head and a dislocated shoulder.

A witness to the accident informed officers he saw the pedestrian walk on the road and get struck by the Mustang. He advised the pedestrian was walking eastbound and that the car was not driving fast.

Family of Luckey report that he “is pretty stiff and sore but up and moving around.”

The Iowa State Patrol arrived on the scene with an accident investigation unit, and was assisting the Oskaloosa Police Department with the investigation.

South Market was closed for just over an hour while the investigation was underway.

The Oskaloosa Police Department was assisted at the scene by Oskaloosa Fire, Mahaska Health Partnership, Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol.
