Cedar Rapids–Milo Bruce-Burgess (Fr., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) kept his William Penn men’s soccer squad close, but his one-man show came up a bit short in a 4-2 loss to Mount Mercy in its Midwest Collegiate Conference opener Saturday.

The Statesmen (8-3, 0-1 MCC), who had their four-game winning streak snapped, were outshot 19-11.

The hosts scored in the 28th minute and then tacked on two more goals in the 48th and 53rd minutes. The three-goal advantage stood for over 20 minutes, but could have grown to even more as William Penn was down one man beginning at the 49:49 mark following a red card.

Instead of falling further behind, the Statesmen fought back as Bruce-Burgess was sent to the penalty-kick area at 74:30 after a foul in the box by Mount Mercy (6-4, 1-0 MCC). He converted in the 75th minute and again with the same opportunity at the 86:37 mark to cut the deficit to one at 3-2. The goals are the first two for the junior in the navy and gold.

The Mustangs unfortunately refused to be knocked off at home, icing the game with their fourth and final goal with 1:18 left in regulation.

Bruce-Burgess and Leonardo Teixeira (Sr., Sao Paolo, Brazil, Business Management) tied for the team lead in shots with three, while Mason Bandy (Jr., Calgary, Alberta, Biology had three saves in the loss. Pedro Pereira (Fr., Sao Paolo, Brazil, Communications) managed one save in a relief appearance.
