Osky Girls Track and Field Shines at Home Relays

Oskaloosa, Iowa—The Oskaloosa High School girls’ track and field team made an impressive showing at the Osky Relays on April 4, 2024. They secured a commendable second-place finish in a competitive field, tying with Carlisle.

Despite challenging weather conditions, with the meet kicking off in windy circumstances and temperatures lingering in the mid-40s, the athletes demonstrated resilience and skill, setting five personal records throughout the event.

Leading the charge for Oskaloosa were the victors of the Shuttle Hurdle Relay team, comprising Sadie Blommers, Lydia VanVeldhuizen, Emmalee Wells-Stout, and Hannah Quang, who finished with a time of 1:14.09. Not to be outdone, the Distance Medley Relay team, consisting of Sarah Phillips, Lily Bonnett, Wells-Stout, and Tierney Carter, also claimed the top spot with a time of 4:40.17.

Individual honors went to Ryleigh Wilken in the open 400 meters, clocking in at 1:04.93, and Evelyn Adam in the 400 hurdles, finishing with a time of 1:13.71. Wilken also showcased her versatility by winning the high jump with a leap of 4 feet 10 inches.

The event was not just about first-place finishes. Oskaloosa athletes set personal records in several events, underlining the team’s depth and potential for the season. Among these achievements, Kennedy Wright set a personal record in the 100 meters.

Coach Betsy Luck expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, especially considering the meet’s adverse weather conditions.

With the outdoor season now in full swing, the Oskaloosa girls track and field team is poised for further accomplishments. They will be looking to carry this momentum into their next meets, traveling to Fort Madison on Tuesday and East Marshall on Thursday, with hopes of building on their early-season success.
