Oskaloosa Students Attend 33rd Annual Iowa Student Leadership Conference

Several students from Oskaloosa High School attended the 33rd annual Iowa Student Leadership Conference – Focus on Leadership XXXIII, Iowa Events Center, Des Moines, IA. The conference was held on October 27 & 28, 2013, and was attended by approximately 1,300 student leaders and student council advisors from across the state of Iowa. This annual conference is sponsored by School Administrators of Iowa and the Iowa Association of Student Councils in partnership with the Iowa High School Athletic Association

44 Oskaloosa High School Student Council members, grades 9-12 attended the conference along with their student council advisors Kim Gile and Dannitta Presley.
Travis Gile, Gerrit Van Maanen, Sarah Overbergen, Ryder Curtis, Jacey Van Roekel, Sarandyn Curtis, Tori Holthaus, Cody Tuttle, and Adviser Kim Gile served as presenters of a breakout session. Student Council President Travis Gile accepted the Honor Council Award on behalf of Oskaloosa High School. Oskaloosa student council members also acted as hosts for the event.

Iowa high schools receiving the highest award for Honor Council with Meritorious Distinction were ADM, Charity Miller, Advisor; Bellevue, Marcia Steines, Advisor; Cascade, Jacob Brindle, Advisor; Centerville, Catherine Lechtenberg, Advisor; Eagle Grove, Michelle Buseman, Advisor; Harlan Community, Vicki Gray Carstens and Mindy Buck, Advisors; Lewis Central, Lu Peverill, Advisor; Mason City, Laura Grommesh, Advisor; Riverside, Holly Hinkhouse, Advisor; Sioux City North, Brenda Bush-Hanson, Advisor; Western Dubuque, Tom Danner, Advisor.

Iowa high schools receiving Honor Council Recognition were Ballard, Catherine Mein, Advisor; Bettendorf, Danielle Brier and Katie Kinsinger, Advisors; Bondurant Farrar High School, Erin Fynaardt and Pattie Davis, Advisors; Corning High School, Lindsay Wetzel, Advisor; Emmetsburg, Linda Welander, Advisor; English Valleys, Chuck Nachtman, Advisor; Estherville Lincoln Central, Steve McCauley, Advisor; Maquoketa, Joyce Lansing and Andrea Urbain, Advisors; Oskaloosa, Kim Gile and Dannitta Presley , Advisors; Sergeant Bluff-Luton, Cynthia Goetz, Advisor; Sioux City West, Abigale Myers, Advisor; Williamsburg, Shannon Musser, Advisor.

Iowa Middle schools receiving Honor Council Recognition were Atlantic Middle School, Ginger Bechtold, Advisor.

Honor Council Awards are given to those schools who submit a scrapbook documenting school, community, state, regional and national activities in which their council has taken part throughout the past year. The award is based on a criterion of excellence which student councils are encouraged to work toward. Points are awarded in each category and total point scores are accumulated to determine qualification for the award.

Tom Danner, Epworth, Western Dubuque High School, Epworth, IA, was awarded the 2013 Warren E. Shull, IASC Advisor of the Year Award. Mr. Danner will compete at the Region V level for the National Advisor of the Year Award.

Stacy Bandy, Principal, Oskaloosa High School, Oskaloosa, IA, was awarded the 2013 Administrator of the Year Award for his commitment, dedication, and support of student activities and student leadership at the local, state, regional, and national level.

Three sophomores were selected to represent the students of Iowa as a state officer on the IASC Advisory Board.

Vicki Gray Carstens, Student Council Advisor, Harlan Community High School, is the conference coordinator and serves as Executive Director for the Iowa Association of Student Councils.
