Oskaloosa Girls Soccer Defeats Ottumwa
The setting sun created a golden glow over Drost Field as the Indians defeated the Bulldogs.

The Oskaloosa girls’ soccer team was able to shake off some tiredness from Prom weekend and dealing with a chilly night to earn a 6-0 victory against the Ottumwa Bulldogs. The win moves the Indians to 3-1 on the season.
The girls would get on the board first with a Penalty Kick 5 minutes in by Kinsey Cook. The girls would continue to control much of the first half and put another goal away 20 minutes when Aleeya Cheney would finish off a pass from Brittany DeMoney. They would go into the half with a 2-0 lead.
“We came out in the 1st half a bit sluggish and a step slow. We were happy we were controlling the match, but challenged the girls to step up their game and put Ottumwa away early in the 2nd half.
The girls would come out with a little more fire, but were still struggling with finding the back of the net. Mary Nelson would put away a rebound in the 57th minute to take the lead to 3-0. The Indians would finally start to warm up offensively as the night temperatures quickly dropped and started playing with an urgency and purpose. Oskaloosa would find the back of the net 3 times in the final 10 minutes with goals from Emily Lunsford (assist Cook), Cook, and Kirby Nelson (assist Cheney).
“We were happy with how the girls finished the last 10 minutes of the game, but challenged them to come out and play a full 80 minutes that way. We got away from passing and moving along with playing as a team. We finally started doing that in the last part of the game and were rewarded with 3 quick goals.”
“The defense did a great job of limiting any opportunities.
The Indians will be back in action Thursday against Centerville with a double header with the boys’ team. The girls are slated for a 5:30 start time in Centerville.
