Oskaloosa Elementary hosts Family Reading Night

School staff help to serve dinner at the first ever Family Reading Night at the Oskaloosa Elementary School

The first ever Family Reading Night took place at the Oskaloosa Elementary School last night, March 3, 2011. Parents and students could RSVP to the event and were served dinner that included a hot dog, chips, cookie and a drink from 5:00 to 7:30 in the commons area at the school.

Free childcare was provided in the gym, and the Scholastic Book Fair was in full swing offering new reading selections to those interested.

The K-2 Reading Sessions went from 5:30 to 6:15 and the 3-5 reading sessions were from 6:30 to 7:15.

Oskaloosa Elementary Building Principle Margaret Jarrard said reading sessions would be held in the classrooms. Jarrard said that, “The teachers would be doing some fun activities with families to show parents how they can help kids at home with reading.”

Jarrard said there were approximately 750 RSVP’s to the first year event.

It was good to see so many parents being involved in their childrens education and it looked as though the night and event was a big success.

Oskaloosa Elementary is a Title 1 school as defined by the US Department of Education as: The purpose of this title is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.
