Oskaloosa City Band To Celebrate Weather Delayed 150th Anniversay
On Thursday evening, the Oskaloosa City Band welcomes an ensemble of the 34th Iowa Army National Guard Band, based in Fairfield. The Patriots drum and fife ensemble will perform beginning at 7:45 pm, as part of the city band’s sesquicentennial celebration.
Formed in 2012, the Patriots ensemble performs historical music from early America, ceremonial military music, and popular Americana selections.
The weather put a damper on last week’s festivities, however, the Oskaloosa Band Boosters, in conjunction with the Mahaska County Cattlemen plan to grill burgers, hot dogs and steak sandwiches from 5 to 7 pm. The band boosters will also have baked goods for sale. All proceeds will go toward Oskaloosa Band programming for students in grades 5 through 12.
Highlights on this week’s program include: Sousa’s Colonel Bogey and El Capitan Marches, Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked, and Concerto for Car Horns & City Band. The band’s talented trumpet section will be featured in a tune entitled Travelin’ Trumpets.
