Numerous Top-10 Efforts at Cornell Invitational

Mount Vernon–The Statesmen women’s track and field team competed against stiff competition and stiff win as it participated at the Cornell Invitational Saturday.

As a team, WPU finished sixth out of 10 teams with 44 points. Mount Mercy claimed the team crown with 134.5 points.

Alexandra Rose (Jr., Quincy, Ill., Exercise Science) guided the Statesmen efforts by placing second in the 100-meter dash in 12.57 seconds. Grace Willms (Fr., Monticello, Iowa, Psychology) was close behind her in fifth at 12.90.

Rose also took seventh in the 200-meter dash (27.20), while Tabitha Rogers (So., Venice, Calif., Elementary Education) led WPU in fifth in 27.11 seconds.

Phoebe Burt (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa, Sociology) had a trio of high finishes in the throws, guided by third place in the discus at 139-11. The junior was also fifth in the shot put at 39-7 and 11th in the hammer throw at 123-8.

Erica Martin (Sr., Detroit, Mich., Sports Management) claimed a bronze as well, doing so in the shot put at 39-10.5, while ending up ninth in the hammer (131-0).

Briana Admire (Fr., Galesburg, Ill., Biology), at 1:03.19 in the 400-meter dash, and Makailah Kelley (Sr., Canton Lake, Calif., Political Science), at 5:21.42 in the 1,500-meter run, were both seventh.

Elizabeth Hele (Sr., Victorville, Calif., Biology) also finished high in the 1,500 as well, placing 13th in a time of 5:29.64.

“Although it was a chilly and windy day, we still had a lot of our ladies take advantage of PRs,” Head Coach Victoria Vinokur said. “Phoebe Burt had a great day, just missing the ‘B’ standard. We are gearing up for warmer weather next weekend.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Cedar Rapids next Friday and Saturday to compete in the Mount Mercy Distance Carnival.
