Nora May Brown
September 20, 1931 – January 21, 2020
What Cheer, Iowa | Age 88

The beautiful Nora May Brown, 88 of What Cheer, formerly of Grinnell passed away the evening of Tuesday January 21, 2020 in her home, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family. Nora May Brown, was the daughter of Roysvell H. Morris and Florence J (Wyatt) Morris. She made her appearance into this world on September 30, 1931 in Nevada, Missouri.

Nora attended a small, brick, one room schoolhouse in Deerfield, Missouri.

Nora was excited to tell her family of when she met her first love, her lord and savior Jesus Christ and became saved in the year 1950. It would be the following year that she was walking on the square in front of Fox theater that she would meet the second love of her life, Ralph Brown. They met, fell in love and just 2 months later would marry on Saturday February 3, 1951. Shortly after, she and her husband moved to Iowa to start their life together.

As their family started and grew Nora was blessed to be able to stay home and care for them. She did all that she could do to help her late husband Ralph provide for their home since they were running on one income. Nora was born to be a caretaker and did it well. She cared for her husband and children, helped with grandchildren and any other family that needed a hand…. hers or not. She took in strays and helped stranded travelers, Nora knew no stranger.

Although Nora was so busy caring for others, she had things of her own that she enjoyed including camping and fishing. She loved dancing and did it up to a few days before her passing. She enjoyed gardening and canning, puzzles, paint by number, and beating everyone at a good hand in rummy. Splitting wood is something that she enjoyed helping with and could in fact out split the men. She read her bible faithfully and when her grandchildren were young she had them attend church every Sunday morning at the Church of the Nazarene in Grinnell which grew their faith and later attended the Hilltop Chapel in What Cheer, Iowa as adults with their Grandmother up until her passing.

Nora blessed this world with 5 wonderful children and 3 bonus children to leave her legacy; Loretta (& Jerry) Sanders of Sigourney, Doris Shine of Newton, Mike (& Debbie) Brown Jr. of Newton, Gary Brown of Tama, Sandra (& Dennis) Braaksma of What Cheer, Susan (& Scott) Brown of University Park, Teresa, Jeff, Don (& Jeannie) Gabrielson of Topeka, KS, Richard (& Connie) Gabrielson of Dubuque, Danny (& Deb) Gabrielson of Rochester, MN, Raymond (& Bev) Gabrielson of Ollie and Allen (& Norm) Gabrielson of Topeka, KS. Her 8 children left her with many grandchildren to continue carrying the legacy, they are; Mary Jane, Jaunda (& Benji), Mike Jr., Gary Jr., Travis, Brad, Roberta (& Josh), Elizabeth “Natasha” (& Nathan), Samantha “Katrina” (& Mitch), Thomas, Connie, Tony, Mandie and Matthew. Her grandchildren gave her the blessing of getting to know and love her many great-grandchildren: Marvin, Vennessa, Jordon, Casey, Curtis, Dominick, Matthew, Andrew, Robert Jr., Cheyenne, Jayden, Levi, Blaze, Brianna, Audrey, Maddison, Aubrey, Gracie, Abigail, Gabrielle, Izabell, Elijah, Cloud, Jaden, Natalie, Leah, October, Leland, Remington, Alyssa, Steven, Ashley, Jaimie, Kailee, Harley and Tiara, and many many more that only knew her as grandma.

There were some loved ones that waited at the pearly gates for Nora to welcome her home. Her husband, Ralph; her son, Roger; her great grandson, Matthew; her parents, Florence and Roysvell; three brothers: Clarence (Charles), Leroy, and Alfred; one sister, Faye; son in laws: Dennis and Les; and many dear friends.

We will gather together for visitation on Sunday January 26, 2-4pm at Holland-Coble funeral home in What Cheer, Iowa. Funeral services will start at 10:30 am on Monday January 27, 2020 at Hilltop Chapel.
Nora’s favorites will follow the service…. pie, soup and coffee.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the family’s name.
