NEW SHARON – Twelve North Mahaska students were inducted into the school’s National Honor Society March 11 in the high school auditorium. The new inductees joined current members Matthew Goemaat, Ronni Layman, Ty Kelderman, Macy Moore, and Emily Sampson.
Students inducted were senior Elizabeth Doane and juniors Gracee Chandler, Anthony Goemaat, Chase Grandia, Layla Hargis, Morgan Hudson, Sean Knockel, Garrett Lamb, Alyssa Scheihing, Carlie Schotlus, Kaitlyn Van Donselaar, and Lexi Van Utrecht.
Co-advisors Kate Hite and Rachel Martin were joined on stage by high school principal Amber Goemaat. Current members explained to the new inductees and those gathered the meaning of the society and for which it stands. Each lit a candle as they explained the four facets.
Moore led off lighting the eternal flame which shines as the members are forever remembered. Sampson spoke of scholarship, Kelderman leadership, Layman service and Matthew Goemaat character.
Each student was introduced and presented their NHS medal. Parents were invited to the stage to place the medal around the neck of the recipient and have their photo taken. With the induction North Mahaska NHS now has 17 members.
