NM Boys Top Tigerhawks

NEW SHARON – Exciting things seem to occur whenever North Mahaska and Colfax-Mingo match up on the baseball diamond. Whether it is extra inning games or slugfests spectators are treated to a game. Monday night in New Sharon the two teams met for the second time in a week and earned an 11-7 victory. The game was a reversal for the Warhawks who were on the short end of a 20-10 contest June 14.

North Mahaska (11-6) struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning and added another in the second and two in the third for a 4-0 lead. They doubled the score in the fourth with four more.

Nolan Andersen worked the first four innings as planned by NM coach Kevin Kelderman. Through four Andersen had given up two hits and walked two batters and hit three. He struck out three. Jayden Stout took the mound and faced four batters allowing a hit and three walks. He would eventually give up four runs. When the top of the fifth was completed, CM had cut the Warhawk lead to 8-5.

Two walks, and error and some wild pitches allowed NM to tack on three more runs. The Tigerhawks (4-9) would score twice in the seventh, but Drake Hall came in recorded a strikeout and chased down a runner to end the game.

“The big inning was when we scored those four runs in the fourth after two outs,” said NM coach Kevin Kelderman. “Nolan did what we needed him to do, and Drake finished it. We certainly have things to work on.”

North Mahaska recorded seven hits but stole 6-for-6 bases and took advantage of three Tigerhawk errors and several wild pitches.

Hall, Sam Terpstra and Jaydyn Steil each drove in two runs. Nate Sampson hit two singles and scored twice. Lucas Nunnikhoven had one hit but scored three times.

Jaydyn Steil picked up the win working 2 1/3 innings. He allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.

Cole Bracewell led Colfax-Mingo at the plate scoring twice and hitting two singles. Joe Earls took the loss for the Tigerhawks. He gave up eight runs, five earned, on seven hits and five walks.

The same two teams will meet in the opening round of the Class 1A baseball tournament at Lynnville-Sully on Saturday, July 2. Time to be determined.
