NM Boys Third, Girls Fifth at Sigourney

SIGOURNEY – North Mahaska’s track teams got back into action Tuesday at the Savage Relays in Sigourney. The meet was a tune-up to the Class 1A district meet, which will be held in Sigourney on Thursday, May 9. The boys tallied 63 points while the girls scored 56.

Eight teams at the meet will compete against North Mahaska at the district meet. Columbus won the boys meet with 101 and Winfield-Mount Union was second with 92. Pekin won the girls meet with 88 followed by HLV with 79, Albia m77, Cardinal 63 and North Mahaska.

North Mahaska’s boys won the 3,200-meter relay and the 1,600-meter relay. Ben Yang, Asher DeBoef, Nates Sampson and Brayden Veiseth won the 3,200 in 8 minutes 54.11 seconds, the 1600 team of Kaleb Stout, Lucas Nunnikhoven, Sampson and Knockel covered the distance in 3:32.13.

Knockel also picked up a first and a third in the 200 and 100. He won the 200 in 22.84 and placed third in the 100 in 11.31.

Veiseth earned the team’s only second in the 1,600 meters in 4:43.89.

Hunter Wernli, Chance Angle, Stout and Yang finished third in 3:57.91. Nunnikhoven was third in the 400 hurdles in 57.53.

Sprint medley team of Wernli, Gage Reis, Tyson Ferguson and Clay Thompson finished fourth in 1:42.43. Max Reed took fifth in the 110 hurdles in 17.65.

Wernli, Reis, Sampson and Angle was sixth in the 800-meter relay in 1:41.3.

Nataliya Linder powered the girls’ team with a first and a third and Emmerson Jedlicka adding a second and third. Linder won the long jump with a leap of 15-feet 9.5 inches and took third in the 400 hurdles. She finished in 1:12.35.

Jedlicka took second in the 3,000 meters and third in the 1,500. She ran the 3,000 in 11:40.40 and the 1,500 in 5:27.18.

Kieren Perez earned the team’s lone title with a win in the 100 hurdles in 17.54. Jayden Hiner took second in the high jump at 4-10. Sydney Andersen was fifth in the shot with a put of 32-3.

North Mahaska placed in two relays. They were third in the 3,200-meter relay with Ava Huffman, Amber Knockel, Abby Van Weelden and Aly Steil in 11:28.31. Steil, Knockel, Alivia Schock and Linder placed fifth in the 1,600-meter relay in 4:52.69.

The boys are scheduled to run at PCM Thursday. Both teams will compete at BGM Friday.
