NM Boys Roll Past Eagles

NEW SHARON – North Mahaska was clicking on both ends of the floor as they opened Class 1A District 10 tournament action with a 93-23 win over Moulton-Udell. North Mahaska drained 13 3-pointers and forced 21 Moulton-Udell turnovers to secure the win and move on to host rival Montezuma on Thursday.

For the second game in a row North Mahaska (17-6) scored more points on long balls than the other team did on total points. The Warhawks drained 15 long balls against Martensdale-St. Marys in the regular season finale this past Thursday.

Seniors Nate Sampson and Nolan Andersen combined for the first 14 points as NM built a 14-8 lead. Junior Gabe Hora got into the act and scored 11 points in the last two and a half minutes of the quarter while the defense limited MU to just three more points.

“I wondered at first if all we were going to hit was 3-pointers,” said NM coach Seth Streebin. “We played well on both ends of the floor. We had some turnovers late but that was expected.”

By halftime North Mahaska had built a 53-14 lead to force continuous clock in the second half. The Eagles were held to just a free throw with 34 seconds left in the third quarter for their only points. North Mahaska used speed to convert after a steal or rebound to get into the transition game. The Warhawks outrebounded Moulton-Udell 39-14 in the contest.

Four Warhawks reached double figures in scoring. Hora le with 20 while Andersen added 18 and reserve Aiden Smith finished with 12. Sampson chipped in 11. Lucas Nunnikhoven just missed double figures with nine.

Andersen and Smith each pulled down eight rebounds and Jack Kelderman pulled down seven. Sampson snagged five. Smith led in steals with four and Andersen grabbed three.
