Bourbonnais, Ill.–The Statesmen softball team was stymied for the second day in a row in being swept by #7 Olivet Nazarene in non-conference action Saturday.

William Penn (26-17) fell by scores of 2-0 and 5-1.

Jennifer Whitehead (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) was a Tiger killer for most of the game, striking out six without a walk. The senior kept the home team off the board through the first four innings, but ONU broke up the scoreless tie with one run in the fifth and then tacked on an insurance score in the sixth.

William Penn had just six baserunners in the opener with Malloree Grove (Sr., Runnells, Iowa, Physical Education) having the best success. She led off the game by reaching on an error, but was stranded at third base. Then in the top of the sixth, the senior recorded WPU’s only hit with a lead-off double. Halfway from tying the game at 1-1, she was moved to third on a sacrifice, but was unfortunately picked off in the next at-bat to end the rally.

Whitehead, who allowed two earned runs on six hits, was also called to the circle for the nightcap, but unfortunately was a bit shakier the second time around.

Olivet Nazarene (40-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and then notched two more in the fifth before the Statesmen snapped a 29-inning scoreless streak with a run in the sixth. Ashlee Dennis (Jr., Loveland, Colo., Biology) began the frame with a single and scored three batters later on a double by Brittanee Grove (Jr., Runnells, Iowa, Elementary Education).

The tally was much too little for the navy and gold who were outhit 7-3. The Tigers capped off the scoring with one more run in the bottom of the sixth. Whitehead fell to 17-7 by permitting five runs (all earned) on seven hits. She managed one strikeout without awarding a base on balls.

Next: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Tuesday to host St. Ambrose in a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
