MHP General Surgeon Dr. Timothy Breon was given a special “MHP superhero cape” by Clinical Quality Director Gloria Reed on Friday as she told him he was named a 2016 Iowa Hospital Hero by the Iowa Hospital Association.

Mahaska Health Partnership is proud to announce that MHP General Surgeon Timothy Breon, MD, FACS, is one of 10 people across the state to be selected as a 2016 Iowa Hospital Hero by the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA).

Dr. Breon will be recognized on Oct. 19 in conjunction with the IHA’s annual meeting in Des Moines. According to MHP CEO Jay Christensen, the IHA awards committed healthcare professionals who go above and beyond, tirelessly giving of their time, talent and expertise to improve their organization and the world around them.

“If you’ve worked at MHP for any length of time, you will have a Dr. Breon story to share. Say his name, and people will smile, and often chuckle! It doesn’t matter what department you work in, he makes a positive impression throughout the organization,” Christensen stressed.

“Dr. Breon exemplifies honesty, integrity, courage and commitment to this community and all patients from throughout the region. In addition to the amazing relationships he cultivates with patients and staff, Dr. Breon has also been instrumental in taking our health system to the next level.”

Clinical Quality Director Gloria Reed said she nominated Dr. Breon not for just one specific reason, but a thousand that span more than 14 years since he first came to MHP. “Dr. Breon truly embodies what it means to be a general surgeon in a rural community,” Gloria said.

“When I began thinking about nominating him for this award, I asked a few people what they thought and the response was overwhelming. Not only did they tell me their story, they directed me to others who had a great story to tell.”

Reed wrote in her nomination form: “He truly is an excellent surgeon; we love his humor; he supports community fundraisers not just financially, but with his time and talents; he’s an educator at heart and a very good speaker; he puts his patients first and will often pray with them; he’s a family man and so

proud of his five children; he makes an occasional home visit for the benefit of his patients and/or their family; he has the respect and admiration of the entire medical staff – no easy feat; and he truly cares and makes healthcare personal for his patients and staff every day.”

A few of the many stories from staff include:

* I remember looking out my office window and seeing Dr. Breon, in scrubs, changing a tire for a patient. I couldn’t believe my eyes!

* Prays with many, doesn’t force God or prayer on you or his patients but also knows when it is needed and right and many patients appreciate his willingness to take time to pray with them before any procedure.

* I’ve worked in surgery at a larger facility for many years before coming here. I can honestly say Dr. Breon is one of the best general surgeons I have worked with. He’s amazed me numerous times with his skill and great intuition.

A few of the many positive comments from patients:

* We think the world of Dr. Breon (we hope you know how fortunate you are to have him) and were very pleased with our son’s care before, during and after surgery.

* If I could rate Dr. Breon higher I would! Simply put his skills, both medical and personal manner, are the best I’ve ever had! He was such an amazing doctor I can’t thank him enough; I would recommend Dr. Breon to anyone I know.

* This was my first ever surgery. Everyone did a great job with instructions and very helpful the morning of surgery. Dr. Breon was fantastic. He did such a great job explaining the surgery & putting us at ease.

“MHP is a better healthcare organization thanks to Dr. Breon’s support and involvement,” MHP Chief Nursing Officer Darlene Keuning said. “MHP staff knows it; administration and our board know it; and our patients and community know it. We are so excited that the entire state of Iowa now knows it too!”
