Melvin Slagter, 89 of Tavares, Florida passed away on September 17, 2020. Melvin was born at the home of his parents, John, and Anna Lousma Slagter, near Leighton, Iowa, on June 13, 1931.
Melvin was married to his loving wife, Shirley, for 66 years. His remarkable devotion and care for his wife, Shirley until her passing was admired by everyone.
Melvin was the identical twin brother to Marion, and he was the twelfth of thirteen children. Melvin kept a picture of his best friend in life, Marion, in his bathroom and greeted him every morning.
Melvin always shared his joyful nature and care for others, inspiring others to love the Lord as he served the needs of those around him.
Melvin served his country during the Korean War and began his family life as a farmer in Iowa. He later moved to Waterloo, Iowa and built his successful business, Slagter Piano & Organ Company, during the 1970’s and 80’s after teaching himself how to play the organ and piano. He and Shirley later moved from Waterloo, Iowa to Lake Worth, Florida in 1984 and then retired in Zellwood, Florida to be near their loving son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Saundra Slagter.
Melvin was dedicated to his Heavenly Father and always served his church and neighbors wherever he and Shirley lived. Melvin began every day opening the curtains and thanking the Lord for another beautiful day of life and love. He also loved his Dutch heritage and homeland in Pella, Iowa and missed his twin brother, Marion dearly. Melvin’s joyful and positive attitude never faltered, even during his final days during rehabilitation after surgery. Hospital and care staff, as well as family, friends and even strangers will miss his joyful spirit and warm hugs. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and met him.
Melvin is survived by his children: Steven J. Slagter, Robert A. (& Kim) Slagter, Dennis E. (& Jan) Slagter, and Mark W. (& Saundra) Slagter; sibling, Donald Slagter; sisters-in-law, JoAnn (Henry) Slagter and June (Marion) Slagter; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Slagter; five sisters; and six brothers.
A graveside service will be held October 17, 2020 at 10:30 AM in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa, Iowa with Reverend Jonathan Spronk officiating.
According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the events.
The funeral service will be live streamed at the funeral home’s YouTube Channel for those wishing to support the family from a distance.
