Panora–Zach McGriff (Fr., Grinnell, Iowa, Biology) performed well enough over the weekend to make most varsity teams, but unfortunately his score was not a countable one as the freshman won the individual crown at the AIB “Eagles 4 Heroes” Invitational Friday and Saturday.

William Penn placed fourth out of nine teams at the windy-one-day, wet-the-next par-72 Lake Panorama Golf Course. The squad posted a 646 (319-327), while host AIB won the event at 621 (302-319).

McGriff, playing as the team’s lone individual, tied Josh Udelhofen of Clarke at 150. He recorded back-to-back scores of 75 to lead the 55-player field.

McGriff’s varsity teammates also tried to hold their own on the tough venue. Clay Tucker (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) guided the squad by tying for fifth at 154 (78-76).

Byron Lindeque (Jr., Boksburg, South Africa, Business Management) and Chris Dupont (Fr., Miami, Fla., Physical Education) were next in a tie for 19th at 163. Lindeque shot 80-83 and Dupont finished 81-82.

Charlie Hayes (Fr., Whitesboro, Texas, History/Government) was 26th at 166 (80-86), while Ben Roberts (So., Albia, Iowa, Business Management) tied for 42nd at 179 (87-92).

Next: William Penn takes a week off before coming home to host the William Penn Invitational on Friday and Saturday, October 11-12.
