McGowan to Steer Lady Statesmen Soccer Program

William Penn Women's Athletics

Oskaloosa–William Penn University Athletics Director Greg Hafner has announced the hiring of William McGowan as Head Women’s Soccer Coach.

McGowan comes to William Penn after serving the same role at Iowa Central Community College for the past seven years. During that stretch, he led the Tritons to an 87-42-9 record, including a 37-14-3 mark in conference play.

“Coach McGowan brings a great deal of coaching and recruiting experience to our women’s soccer program,” Hafner said. “We are excited to have him on our staff.”

McGowan was named NSCAA Central Region Women’s Coach of the Year and NJCAA Region XI Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year in 2005. That fall, he guided the women to a seventh-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament.

McGowan’s teams were also strong academically, earning numerous NSCAA and NJCAA scholar awards.

“First off, I want to thank the administration at William Penn for putting their faith in me to take on this challenge,” McGowan said. “My initial plans are to evaluate what is here and then go from there. I do not plan to change everything immediately. I hope to take what is currently in place and make a nice transition with current players and ones entering next fall.”

“I fully expect we can mount a challenge and be very competitive in the conference,” McGowan added. “I want to rebuild the strong soccer tradition that was once here and I know it can be done with a lot of hard work and commitment. After spending the first part of my coaching career at the junior-college level, I am motivated to proving that I can also be successful as a coach at the four-year level.”

McGowan, who garnered his associate’s degree from Iowa Central in 2000, joined the Triton staff as an assistant in 2002 and continued in that position until his hiring as head coach in 2005.

McGowan owns several coaching certifications, including an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, a USSF National ‘D’ Certificate, and an NSCAA Regional Goalkeeping Diploma (Level II).

He also served as Head Girls Soccer Coach at Fort Dodge High School from 2009 to 2011.

A 2002 graduate of Grand View University with a degree in psychology, McGowan earned his masters in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University (Calif.) earlier this fall.

McGowan becomes the sixth skipper in the program’s history and replaces Greg Walter, who was head coach the past six seasons.
