Maxine Lois Chamra, 96, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born Monday, December 20, 1920, in Rose Hill, the daughter of Hugh Ferrell and Golda Isabelle Hackley Moore.

Maxine graduated from the Rose Hill High School with the Class of 1938. On August 4, 1938, Maxine was united in marriage to Charles Chamra in Iowa City and Charles died April 14, 1993.

Following marriage, Maxine and Charles farmed together near Rose Hill. In 1953, they moved to their farm east of Hopewell Cemetery. In 1979, they retired and moved to Oskaloosa. She continued to live in her own home in Oskaloosa until November of 2016, when she became a resident at Crystal Heights in Oskaloosa.

Maxine was a member of the Beacon United Methodist Church, a former board member for Old Rose Hill Cemetery, past district representative for the Hereford Association and helped organize Mahaska County Porkettes.

Maxine and Charles enjoyed their winters together in Texas. A trip she continued to make after Charles’ death. She also enjoyed lunch and coffeetime with her friends, crocheting afghans for many of her family and doing word puzzles.

She is survived by her three children: John (& Francine) Chamra of Rose Hill, Faye (& Gordon) Foster of Pella, and Lee (& Kathy) Chamra of Leighton; six grandchildren: Cathy (& Curt) Roozeboom, Peggy (& Roger) Hoyt, Keith (& Sally) Foster, David (& Lisa) Foster, Brian Chamra and Brad (& Jenna) Chamra; ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Wayne Chamra; a daughter-in-law, Judy Chamra; a granddaughter, Karen Foster; two brothers, Orville and Everett Moore; and a sister, Helen Leonard.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 2, 2017, at 10 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Roger White officiating.
Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery north of Rose Hill.
Visitation will begin Wednesday, February 1, 2017, after 11 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Wednesday from 5 to 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Beacon United Methodist Church.
