MAHASKA COUNTY – Mahaska Health Partnership has named Pediatrician John O’Brien, MD, the 2012 MHP MVP (Most Valuable Provider).

“This award goes to an outstanding provider who goes above and beyond, lives the values of MHP and helps us in accomplishing our healthcare mission,” MHP CEO Jay Christensen said. “Choosing just one provider to honor from our outstanding Medical Staff is no easy task.”

Members of the physician satisfaction team help select the MVP based on patient and staff comments, leadership and participation in community events. According to Christensen, Dr. O’Brien is truly dedicated to his patients and is well known for providing excellent customer service and compassionate care.

Dr. O’Brien regularly volunteers to staff the MHP Pediatrics booth at Kidtoberfest, the annual kids fair sponsored by the ISU Extension Office in Oskaloosa. “His little patients love him and many are so excited to see him at Kidtoberfest,” Christensen said. “They just go right up and hug him, it’s really neat. Dr. O’Brien connects with his patients, even going so far as to dress up every Halloween as his alter ego, ‘Patch the Purple Puppy.’”

Dr. O’Brien practices fulltime in MHP Specialty Services, located on the MHP campus in Oskaloosa. He joined the MHP Medical Staff in 2008 after practicing in Ottumwa for more than 15 years. He treats children from birth to 18 years of age for primary care needs such as illness or injury and annual preventive care, and has special expertise in diagnosing and treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

A few of the many patient satisfaction comments include: “My kids love Dr. O’Brien and I have nothing but excellent things to say about him,” “Dr. O’Brien is always a patient listener. He and his nurse always want what is best for my son – much appreciated. I have referred friends to Dr. John for ADHD and they are also pleased,” and “Dr. O’Brien always makes the kids comfortable before he examines them. My kids are very well cared for at the clinic.”

Dr. O’Brien received his award at MHP’s Annual Provider Appreciation Dinner, held Dec. 13 at the Peppertree. The theme of this year’s event was “Building our Future Together.” Many providers were honored with special awards such as “Structural Support”, “Chief Bricklayer” and “General Contractor” that tied to the building theme of the evening.

“It is my honor to congratulate our 2012 award recipients and to work alongside them every day,” Christensen said. “We have an outstanding medical staff whose members often sacrifice their personal time to serve our patients when they need them most.

“Our Medical Staff includes the providers at Family Medical Center and MHP Specialty Services who have the common goal of creating a stronger healthcare system in Mahaska County. We continually collaborate to ensure a strong relationship to meet all of your family’s primary healthcare needs locally.

“As we look toward the New Year, I am thankful for the strides our Medical Staff has made and look forward to our continued partnership in the years to come.”
