MAHASKA COUNTY – Starting in September of 2018, Mahaska Health Partnership will offer the public a new educational event series, Health Focus Live, focusing on how attendees can live healthier, happier lives.

“Our goal at Mahaska Health Partnership is to enhance the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” shared Mahaska Health Partnership CEO Kevin DeRonde. “We believe that one of the most effective ways to do so is by offering free, educational events anybody can attend and benefit from.”

Health Focus Live will begin with a four-part bi-weekly lunch and learn series featuring a wide variety of topics presented by Mahaska Health Partnership staff.

The first session, “One Bite at a Time: Combating Mindless Eating,” will be presented by Lea Rice, RD, LDN on Tuesday, September 11. She will share information on how guests can break the cycle of mindless eating and recognize the body’s fullness cues. The tips offered in this session will inspire guests to create a healthier eating environment at home and at work.

On Tuesday, September 25, Michelle Hynick, LMT will lead the session, “Massage is Good for Your Health!” Virtually every system of the body is affected by massage, either directly or indirectly. This session will cover the many ways the body can benefit from massage.

“5 Things You Should Know About Stress” will be held on Tuesday, October 9. Shanon Claussen, LISW, RPT-S, CADC will discuss the impact stress can have on a person’s life and health over time. Everyone goes through stress at different times in their life. Guests will learn what they can do about stress for themselves and for others.

The final session, “Are you at Risk for Metabolic Syndrome?” will be led by Lea Rice, RN, LDN and Sharon Ferguson, RN, CDE. Metabolic syndrome is a collection of symptoms that can lead to diabetes and heart disease. This session will cover risk factors, prevention, treatment, and how simple lifestyle changes can make a significant difference.

Soup will be served at each session. The events will be held on the Mahaska Health Partnership campus in Oskaloosa from noon to 1 PM on their respective dates in room ECA, best accessed through entrance #2.

While the sessions are free, pre-registration for each event in this four-part series is required. Guests are encouraged to register online at EventBrite.com by searching for “Health Focus Live”. RSVPs can also be made to Lea Rice at 641.672.3303.
