Oskaloosa, IA – The Oskaloosa Public Library announces the return of Mahaska Reads with a series of events and book discussions between September 15 and October 15 this fall. Residents of Oskaloosa and Mahaska County are encouraged to participate by reading this year’s selection, Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup.

To kick off the series of events, the Public Library will host Unconditional Surrender: A Visit with Ulysses S. Grant to be presented by Pete Grady on Tuesday, September 16. The presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m. on the third floor of the library.

In Unconditional Surrender, Peter Grady brings Ulysses S. Grant to life in this informative, humorous, and touching portrayal. Meet the victorious General whose strategy and tenacity won the Civil War, the President who struggled to rebuild his country after the war, and the husband and father whose final efforts were devoted to the financial support of his wife and family.

Grady is a 1975 graduate of St. Ambrose and a 1984 graduate of the University Of Iowa College Of Law. He serves as an Assistant Attorney General in the Iowa Department of Justice and also serves as board chairman of the Mid-Iowa Community Action agency.

The first thirty people in attendance at the September 16 presentation will receive a free copy of Twelve Years a Slave, courtesy of the Oskaloosa Public Library Foundation.

Other Mahaska Reads events following the September 16 presentation will include Reading Around Twelve Years a Slave at the Oskaloosa High School Library at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23; a Community Book Discussion at Maple Ridge Assisted Living at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 2; and a presentation on Abraham Lincoln and Emancipation to take place at the Book Vault at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14.

Mahaska Reads is a community wide reading project in coordination with William Penn University’s Wilcox Library, the Oskaloosa High School Library, and the Book Vault. For more information about Mahaska Reads, visit the Oskaloosa Public Library’s website at www.oskaloosalibrary.org.
