Lucille Opal DeMoney, 97, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born October 7, 1919, in Keokuk County, the daughter of Herman F. and Alice Opal (Neal) Wickenkamp.

Lucille attended country school in Keokuk County. When she was a teenager her mother passed away. Lucille picked up the duties of caring for the home and her father and brother.

On December 21, 1940, she was united in marriage to Burleigh Ray DeMoney. To this union three children were born, Don, Ken, and Shirley.

Lucille stayed home to care for her family and home, she also helped Burleigh on the farm. On Christmas day in 1966, Burleigh died. Lucille then moved to Oskaloosa and went to work at the Downey Hotel and the Canary Cottage. She later went to work in Housekeeping at Mahaska Hospital, retiring from there in 1984.

Lucille was strong willed and independent. She lost her mother and her husband early in life and she learned to do many things on her own. She continued to maintain her home and yard until she was into her late 80’s. She enjoyed crocheting, playing BINGO, traveling, painting ceramics, putting puzzles together, and adult coloring books. She delighted in being around her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her family includes her three children and their spouses: Donald (& Nancy) DeMoney of Eddyville, Ken (& Devona) DeMoney of Rose Hill, and Shirley (& Richard) Lewis of Newton; five grandchildren: Shelly (& David) Lee, Jamie (& Amy) DeMoney, Troy (& Candi) DeMoney, Scott DeMoney, and Tammy (& Randy) Danielson; eight great grandchildren: Kelsie Lee, Katie Lee, Kinzley DeMoney, Kacen DeMoney, Brittany DeMoney, Todd (& Amanda) St. Peter, Lane Danielson, and Valeria Danielson; two great great grandchildren, Addilinne Moob and Khloe St. Peter; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother and his wife, George (& LaVaughn) Wickenkamp.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 16, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family will be held Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the MHP Hospice Serenity House.
