LOCAL CHEESE MAKER TO SPEAK AT NELSON PIONEER FARM
A local cheese maker from Leighton, Iowa, will be the guest speaker at the next Mahaska County Historical Society quarterly meeting and potluck scheduled for Monday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m. inside Bradbury Hall at Nelson Pioneer Farm.
Mike and Jason Bandstra, owners of Frisian Farms, will tell how they built their farm from 10 year-old Holstein cows to the Farmstead Gouda cheese factory it is today and how they incorporated their Dutch heritage and an old-country Dutch recipe into today’s agribusiness. They’ll explain how the cheese is made, as well as the difference between young cheese and aged Gouda.
The meeting is free and open to the public. Bring a dish to share and your own tableware. For more information, call 641-672-2989.
