The patriotic song “God Bless the USA” sung by Lee Greenwood has always been one of my favorite songs. Right now the citizens of Oskaloosa have the opportunity to stand up and vote for the city council members that will serve the people of Oskaloosa.

I don’t live in Oskaloosa but do own property within the city limits. Oskaloosa is the first place I look to for the majority of my purchases as well as medical needs. My kids attended school there as well as attending church in this city. I know Oskaloosa is full of friendly, hard working, dedicated people and many of our friends live in Oskaloosa.

However, I must say I am very disappointed in the way the city council has entered into a 28E agreement with Mahaska County and the City of Pella on behalf of a new airport. Then the council voted to use eminent domain to purchase rural home owner’s homes and property. They believe it is all about the money. It isn’t. They just don’t get it or don’t care. This is a way too expensive agenda to undertake without the vote of the citizens of Oskaloosa.

We have an airport that works and can be expanded. We also have the Ottumwa airport. It has been said these airport options are too far away. Well, there are many school children that ride a bus for a much longer period of time than it takes to get to our airports. When the jets arrive at other cities – how long does it take to travel to your final destination? Oskaloosa leaders have been supportive of restoring older buildings around the square. Why not restore an airport that has been there since the WWII Era?

I believe Oskaloosa needs leadership that will directly benefit Oskaloosa Citizens and have the pride to keep the excessive spending in Washington D.C. Stand up Oskaloosa voters – GO VOTE.
