Lee’s Two Goals Help WPU to OT Win Over Crimson Wave
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen women’s soccer team played yet another overtime game Sunday afternoon, but this time the navy and gold came out on top in a 3-2 win over Calumet-St. Joseph (Ind.) in the finale of the WPU Classic Sunday.
For the third time this year, William Penn (3-2) was forced into extra time, but for the first time it was victorious when Camila Parra (Fr., Brisbane, Australia, Biology) scored on a pass from Isabel Sandez (Jr., Bloomington, Calif., Exercise Science) 4:25 into the first OT.
A 12-5 edge in shots was secured by the home squad. WPU took advantage of a dominant first stanza when Francis Lee (Fr., Fort Dodge, Iowa, Undecided) scored twice in the 34th and 39th minutes. She and Parra are now tied for the team lead with three goals each.
Alyce Correia (So., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) assisted on the first score, while a corner kick from Silvia Munoz (Jr., Paramount, Calif., Elementary Education), with help from Lauren Abbas (Jr., Adel, Iowa, Communications), assisted on the second goal.
The Statesmen continued to hold its multiple-goal edge until the final minutes, but unfortunately the game was far from over. The Crimson Wave (3-3) shocked their hosts with quick scores of their own at 86:34 and then again at 87:58 to cause Sunday’s extra play.
Kelly Button (Sr., Tucson, Ariz., Business Management) had one save in the win.
Next Up: William Penn stays at home Wednesday to host Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) in non-conference action at 4 p.m.
