LaVerne Fleck, 68, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa.

LaVerne was born February 1, 1945, at Oskaloosa, the son of Ray F. and Irene Chilcote Fleck. LaVerne attended Eddyville Schools. Early on he worked for various farms in the area. He moved to Wellman, Iowa and went to work for a nursing home there. His next move was to Ottumwa where he went to work for the county home and also McCurdy Seed in Fremont. He took a job at a foundry in Bloomfield and moved there to be closer to work, he enjoyed living and working there but the foundry work took a toll on his body. He returned to Ottumwa and went to work for Tenco for a short time. In 2009 he moved to Oskaloosa to be near his mother. Early in life, LaVerne loved to play baseball and ride motorcycles. As he got older he no longer played baseball but always enjoyed watching games. All of his life he loved picnics and fried chicken. He enjoyed playing games, especially BINGO and cards. LaVerne had a soft spot in his heart for dogs. He attended the Methodist Church in Eddyville with his parents. He was very independent and will be remembered for his quiet actions and sweet smile.

His family includes his mother, Irene Fleck of Oskaloosa; two sisters, Dixie (& Adrian) Lorenz of Knoxville and Vickie (& Ron) Nikkel of Lynnville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; a nephew, Clint Nikkel; and a great niece, Haley Brees.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 30, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Friday morning after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel Friday evening from 5-7 to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Christian Opprotunity Center.
