Lady Statesmen Knock Off #21 Flames 78-59

William Penn’s Orielle Thomas had a double-double of 18 points and 18 rebounds. She also managed a game-high five steals.

Oskaloosa–Playing a ‘countable’ game for the first time in ten days, the William Penn women’s basketball team picked up a big win with a 78-59 upset against #21 Saint Mary (Neb.) in non-conference action Tuesday night.

The Lady Statesmen (4-4), who outshot CSM (5-3) 43.7%-32.3, went back and forth with the visitors early until finally taking the lead for good at 17-16 on a three-point play by Sam Abens (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education).

The advantage grew to ten points by halftime at 40-30, and then exploded in the opening minutes of the second stanza. The first 4:54 of post-intermission was owned by the navy and gold with 14 unanswered points to go up 54-30.

Unfortunately, the Lady Statesmen failed to could close the door at that point, giving up 19 of the next 21 points as the margin tightened to seven with 6:24 remaining.

A tough midsection of the second stanza was just a bump in the road as a 15-2 WPU run put the contest out of reach.

Both squads committed numerous errors, combining for 48 turnovers, but William Penn was more advantageous as the 26 Flame mistakes were converted into 37 points.

Janay Pritchett (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Biology) continued her recent tear with a career high of 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Orielle Thomas (Sr., Waynesville, Mo., Physical Education) was next with a monster double-double of 18 points and 18 rebounds. She also managed a game-high five steals.

Abens surpassed double figures as well with 11 points, while Katie Golomski (So., Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology) added eight points and Sarah Martin (Sr., Anthem, Ariz., Physical Education) contributed seven. Martin dished out six assists as well.

The Lady Statesmen notched a 46-40 edge in rebounding.

Next: William Penn stays at home Thursday to host Central in non-conference play at 8 p.m.
