Lady Statesmen in Top Ten Twice in Nevada

Las Vegas, Nev.–The William Penn women’s bowling team netted two impressive placings out west this week.

On Monday and Tuesday, the Lady Statesmen placed fourth out of 16 teams at the Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout. Then, on Wednesday and Thursday, the navy and gold took tenth place out of 16 teams at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational.

At the Shootout, William Penn tallied 10,211 pins, while Wichita State (Kan.) was first with 11,127 pins. The event was comprised of six regular games and four sets of Bakers.

Tannya Roumimper of Wichita State was the top individual with a 220.2 average (1,321 pins).

Samantha Powell (Sr., Herriman, Utah, Psychology/Human Services) was only seven pins shy of the title, finishing second with a 219.0 average (1,314 pins). A total of 102 competitors were in the field.

Powell’s tournament average crushed the program’s previous record of 206.4, set last year by Breanne Underwood (Grad., Treynor, Iowa, Master’s of Business Leadership).

Kirstin Newberry (Jr., Holland, Mich., Secondary Education), who was seventh at 194.7, and Jessica Ganem (Sr., Austin, Texas, Psychology), who was tenth at 186.5, were also in the top ten.

Kelsey Johnson (So., Montgomery, Ill., Secondary Education), with a 177.5 mark, and Abigayle Wempen (Sr., Titonka, Iowa, Public Accounting), with a 168.7 clip, concluded the scoring. All five players started six games.

William Penn knocked down 7,850 pins in the Glenn Carlson tourney, while Wichita State was again first with 9,160 pins. The Shockers finished off the sweep with the bracket play title.

Wichita State’s Jazreel Tan was the top individual out of 102 players with a 220.0 average.

Newberry guided the navy and gold with a 181.4 average, while Powell (178.6) and Johnson (177.8) also started all nine games.

Wempen, with a 164.4 mark, and Ganem, with a 159.1 clip, each started seven games, while Amanda Edenholm (Sr., Marysville, Wash., Secondary Education) posted a 186.3 average over the duration of four games.

Next: William Penn is off until after school resumes, traveling to Addison, Ill. for the Robert Morris Baker Challenge on January 12-13.
