Lady Statesmen End Year at Grand View

William Penn Women’s Athletics

Des Moines–The second meeting unfortunately was no better than the first for the William Penn women’s soccer team as it concluded 2012 with a 6-0 loss to #2 seed Grand View in the quarterfinals of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament Saturday.

The #7-seeded Lady Statesmen, who close out the campaign at 3-16, were outshot 32-0. Exactly one week ago, the navy and gold fell 4-0 to Grand View in regular season play.

The Vikings (10-7-1) got on the board in the seventh minute and added three more scores before halftime. The hosts then tacked on two final goals after intermission.

Amber Klootwyk (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management/Education) stopped four shots in the first half, while Laura Gentry (Jr., Fruitland, Idaho, Physical Education) tallied five saves in the final 45 minutes.

“When you play a squad like Grand View, it is important not to make mistakes and we unfortunately made too many individual errors in the first half,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “We gave everything we had in the second half and I am pleased with how these girls have improved and worked hard for each other the past few weeks.”

“I feel we have made very good progress this year,” McGowan added. “Despite the end results, our performances have improved.”

The loss ends the collegiate careers of five seniors, including Ashur Amai (Queensland, Australia, Biology), Rebecca Brenner (Cheyenne, Wyo., Physical Education), Jordan Davis (Centerville, Iowa, Physical Education), Breanna Hochhalter (Gilbert, Ariz., Physical Education), and Desiree Rosario (Brunswick, Ga., Information Technology).

“We sadly say goodbye to some good seniors who will move onto the next chapter of their lives,” McGowan said. “We hope they know they always have a place here at William Penn.”
