Katrana Annihilates Records as WPU Drops Missouri Valley
Marshall, Mo.–Garrett Katrana (So., Parker, Colo., Industrial Technology) was a master of distribution Tuesday, breaking school and national records as the Statesmen men’s lacrosse team defeated Missouri Valley 32-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
No. 5 William Penn (8-1, 5-0 Heart), which moved its winning streak to seven games, dominated in all facets, headlined by a mind-blowing 56-1 edge in shots. The lone shot from MVC (0-9, 0-4 Heart) did not come until the fourth quarter.
The visitors won 33 of the 35 faceoffs, including the opening one which led to a goal by Matt Scott (Fr., Denver, Colo., Sports Management), who was assisted by Katrana. That started a common theme for the afternoon as Katrana helped on his squad’s first five goals.
He had nine assists by the end of the first quarter and a school-record 13 by halftime (previous record by Breck Putzier in 2025). The sophomore ended up with an NAIA record of 15 assists at the final horn. He also notched three goals to tally 18 total points, which also shattered the program record (17 by Breck Putzier in 2024) and national record (also 17).
Additionally, Katrana broke the single-game assists record for all levels of collegiate men’s lacrosse. The record, according to NCAA.org, was previously 14 by Denis Shea of Massachusetts Maritime in 1997.
Led by Katrana’s passing prowess, the Statesmen tied the school single-game record with 26 assists.
The navy and gold blew out to a 15-0 advantage after the first 15 minutes and cruised from there. Kenny Bohney (Sr., Moorhead, Minn., Exercise Science) and Everett Breniser (So., Centennial, Colo., Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management) beat the goalkeeper four times in the opening stanza, while Scott did so on three occasions.
Nate Levy (So., Lynwood, Wash., Biology) headlined the offense in the second period with four goals, while Katrana scored twice.
Harley Williams (Sr., Edmonton, Alberta, Political Science) managed a trio of third-quarter scores, and Isaac Heitschmidt (Fr., Oregon City, Ore., Industrial Technology) connected twice in the fourth period.
Following Katrana’s 18-point effort, Bohney (five goals, three assists) and Breniser (four goals, four assists) both finished with eight points. Williams produced five winners with a helper, while Levy (four goals, one assist) and Scott (three goals, two assists) were huge contributors as well.
Of WPU’s 33 faceoff wins, Carter Holden (Fr., Idaho Falls, Idaho, Computer Science) won all 17 of his attempts and Bryce Campbell (Sr., Meridian, Idaho, Kinesiology) was victorious in all 12 of his tries.
The victors collected 57 ground balls to just 11 for the Vikings with Holden grabbing a team-best 11 (Campbell had nine).
Missouri Valley lost possession 19 times (Scott caused four turnovers), while the home team was also limited to only two clears in 19 chances (WPU was 3-for-3).
“The guys took care of business, and made a good step in the right direction as we head into the most important stretch of our season,” Head Coach Luke Christiansen said. “Offensively, we hit all the metrics and the goals that we had, and now on to some big-time games.”
