Oskaloosa, Iowa

Kathryn passed away early Wednesday afternoon at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center in Oskaloosa at the age of 97 years, 5 months and 25 days of age.

Kathryn Angeline Heaton, daughter of Edwin and Kittie Lockwood Boles, was born August 24, 1915, near Bussey in Mahaska County. As a student at Bussey High School, she worked for the school superintendent and she graduated in 1933. After her education she stayed home to help care for her father who was in poor health. Kathryn was a good athlete and she enjoyed playing softball after graduating. December 10, 1938, she married Clifford Cecil Heaton in Oskaloosa. They settled on a farm in Jefferson Township, where she was a true helpmate to her husband: Kathryn assisted with the chores, milked the cows and drove the tractor. Kathryn lived on the farm for fifty years before moving into Oskaloosa in 1993. After her children were older, Kathryn worked for Farm Bureau Insurance as a secretary for six years. She then went to work in the Mahaska County Clerk of Court’s office, and concluded her career as Deputy Recorder in the recorder’s office. Kathryn was a member of the First Christian Church where she belonged to Esther Circle and enjoyed the quilting group with friends. She was a member of the D.A.R. and Oskaloosa Women’s Club, her neighborhood O.D.O. (Our Day Out) Club, Mahaska Hospice Auxiliary and the Mahaska County Historical Society. Kathryn and Cliff courted and married during the depression years but this did not deter them from having fun; Cliff played the banjo and many friends and family also played musical instruments. For many years they enjoyed evenings playing music and dancing together. Kathryn was an excellent seamstress and even sewed Lorraine’s bridesmaid’s dresses; she also enjoyed playing cards and will be remembered as a wonderful cook.

Her family includes her daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Rex Blom of Oskaloosa; a daughter-in-law, Janet Heaton of Mexico, MO; five grandchildren: Dr. Julie (Tracey) Lassere of Daphne, AL; Todd (Malia) Heaton of Phoenix, AZ; Mark (Pam) Blom of Phoenix, AZ; Michelle (Brent) VandeWall of Prairie City, IA; Dr. Mitchell (Sara) Blom of Pella, IA; and 13 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Cliff, April 4, 1985; a son, Ray Heaton, November 22, 2012; four brothers: Fred, Don, Russell and Roscoe Boles and two sisters: Irene Dugger and Florence Kell.
