Katherine Stewart, 85, of Pella and formerly of Ottumwa, passed away Thursday evening, October 3, 2019, at Jefferson Place in Pella.
Katherine C. Stewart, daughter of Martin and Blanche (Johnson) Wynstekers, was born December 9, 1933, in rural Mahaska County, Iowa.
Katherine was a 1952 graduate of Eddyville High School and then furthered her education at Drake University and William Penn College. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Education.
Lacey, Iowa was where Katherine began her teaching career. She taught in multiple locations before taking a position teaching in the lower elementary grades in Ottumwa, Iowa, where she taught for more than 30 years.
Katherine’s faith was foundational in her life and she attended church faithfully. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, sewing, and knitting. As a young girl, she showed her poodle dogs, and throughout her life she always loved animals, especially dogs.
Her family includes her daughters: Christy Van Wyk of Pella and Lou Ann (& Gary) Martin of Cheyenne, Oklahoma; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild soon to arrive.
In addition to her parents, Katherine was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise LeMay, and a sister, Margaret Wynstekers.
As was her wish, Katherine’s body has been cremated.
Burial of her ashes will be done privately at Highland Cemetery near Eddyville. Langkamp Funeral Chapel & Crematory is entrusted with her arrangements.
