Joseph George Nucko Jr., age 78, of Albia, IA, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia. Joe was born on December 25, 1943, in Des Moines, IA, to Joseph Sr. and Marjorie (Phillips) Nucko.

Joe grew up and attending school in Albia. Following school, Joe served his country in the United States Navy.

On August 9, 1980, he married Sharon Stephens at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia. They shared 25 years of marriage before her passing on January 9, 2015. In 2016, Joe began his relationship with Sharon Stuchel.

Joe worked in construction for 42 years with Weitz Construction Company, which took him all over the United States building high-rise and retirement homes. He worked himself into a supervisory position and the company later became Hy-Vee Weitz, where he assisted with building numerous Hy-Vee stores.

Joe enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, golfing, and target shooting with his collection of guns. He was a talented woodworker, building cabinets, shelves, and entertainment centers. He was a race fan of all kinds, especially of Nascar racing. He enjoyed his street rods over the years, including a ’35 Ford, ’29 Bucket T Ford, ’57 Chevys and his most recent ’55 Chevy. Above all else, Joe loved spending time with his family and friends.

Joe is survived by his significant other, Sharon Stuchel; his children: Dave (& Kathy) Thomas, Debbie (& Jerry) Mickles, Rhonda McGee and Zane McGee; 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and his siblings: Pat (& Joe) Angran, Sharon Boehnke, Eleanor (& Richard) Hatfield and Barb (& Kenny) Lovstuen; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon; his parents, Joseph and Marjorie; 3 brothers-in-law, Junior Hugen, Phil Boehnke and Roger Stephens; and his best friend, Tom Stafford.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, 2022, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Joe’s family present from 4:00 p,m, to 7:00 p.m., to greet family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 25, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albia, with Father Mark Yates, C.PP.S. officiating.

Military honors will be provided by the American Legion of Albia, Lovilia, and Melrose.

Following services, Joe’s body will be cremated per his wishes and a private family burial will be held at a later date.

A memorial has been established to the Welcome Home Soldier Monument in Albia.
