Joseph Eugene Coder, 73, of Oskaloosa died Sunday, October 20, 2019, at Mercy West Lake Campus in Des Moines. He was born January 5, 1946, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Eugene Harry and Pauline Roskup Coder.

Following high school graduation, Joe joined the United States Marine Corps. During his eight years in the Marine Corps he was part of multiple tours in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged as a decorated war veteran. Upon his discharge from the military, he spent a short time in San Diego, California.

Joe later moved to Oskaloosa where he met his future wife, Sandra Dickerson, at the First Pentecostal Church. The two of them were married on August 31, 1974, at the First Pentecostal Church in Oskaloosa.

Joe worked for 19 years at Pella Rolscreen (now Pella Corporation), until his ill health forced him to retire from factory work.

Joe was a member of the First Pentecostal Church in Oskaloosa where he and Sandy were involved in puppet ministry. He also enjoyed being Peanuts the Pink Elephant at the old ATPIC Mall in Oskaloosa many years ago. Joe had a passion for photography. He was very talented at recognizing what would make a great photo. He had the ability to adjust the film speed and camera speed to capture some definite “one of a kind” photographs. Joe delighted in spending time with his grandchildren. After nearly forty years of marriage Sandra died on October 30, 2013. Following the loss of his wife Joe moved into Homestead of Oskaloosa. He enjoyed the time he lived there interacting with the staff and other residents.

His family includes his son and his wife, Aaron and Jennifer Coder of Des Moines; two grandsons, Schyler and Seth Coder; two sisters and their husbands: Cindy (& Peter) Apostoles of Phoenix, Arizona and Margaret (& Jack) Edwards of Mt. Pleasant; and many nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife Sandra; and his parents, Eugene and Pauline.
