John L. Sherlock, 73, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, November 30, 2020, at Mercy One in Des Moines. He was born May 30, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John W. and Norine Brett Sherlock.

John graduated from St. Ignatius High School with the class of 1965. Following high school, John went on to earn his degree from Loras College in 1969. Following graduation John taught school at Holy Rosary Elementary School in LaMotte, Iowa for four years.

On May 20, 1972, he was united in marriage to Ruth Thoma in Dubuque, Iowa.

Following their marriage John worked in management for F.W. Woolworth and Sernett’s. Last John worked in marketing at KBOE Radio in Oskaloosa, he retired from there after 22 years.

In retirement John enjoyed helping his son and daughter in law, Matt and Kandis run Edmundson and Harvest Point Golf Courses. John was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa, Trees Forever, and Oskaloosa Rotary Club. He enjoyed working in the garden, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren.

His family includes his wife of over 48 years, Ruth Sherlock of Oskaloosa; three sons: David Sherlock of Fort Collins, Colorado, Ryan (& Kate) Sherlock of Van Meter, Iowa, and Matt (& Kandis) Sherlock of Oskaloosa; five grandchildren: Dylan, Lennon, Maeve, Jack, and Presley Sherlock; a brother and his wife, Kevin and Sally Sherlock of St. Charles, Missouri; a sister and her husband, Susan and Vito Pingitore of Elmhurst, Illinois; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and her husband, MaryAnn and Jack Barrett; an infant grandson, Lucas Sherlock; and an infant nephew, Richard Sherlock.

As was Johns wish, his body has been cremated.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be on Saturday, December 5, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Troy Richmond officiating.
Private family burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event.
Open visitation will be held on Friday, December 4, 2020 in the Bates Funeral Chapel from 12:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
