John D. Jackson, 55, of Oskaloosa formerly of Des Moines, Iowa, Nashville, Tennessee, and Columbia, Missouri passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017, at his home in Oskaloosa.

John Douglas Jackson was born in Springfield, Illinois, June 9, 1961, to Edward and Marjorie (Bess) Jackson.

John was a 1979 graduate of Valley High School in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was a member of the Valley debate team. After high school, he was accepted into the University of Iowa with a major in English. Later in life, he transferred to Indian Hills where he graduated in 2002 with a degree in computer science.

John was an avid reader and loved creative writing. He was passionate about history, politics, and current events. It was these qualities that led John to work at bookstores, including Davis Kidd in Nashville, Tennessee and Borders in West Des Moines. His career then led him to Wells Fargo as a computer programmer and most recently to State Farm in Columbia, Missouri as a claims adjuster in the Catastrophic Weather Department.

John’s family included his mother, Marjorie Jackson of Oskaloosa; his brother, Jerry Jackson of Waukee, Iowa and his sister, Jane (& Craig) Calvert of Nashville, Tennessee; his nieces and nephews: Alec and Thomas Jackson of Iowa City, Iowa and Jackson, Will, Noah and Caroline Stroud from Nashville, Tennessee.

John was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Edward Lee Jackson; and his brother, David William Jackson.

The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude for the many kindnesses extended by family and friends.

Memorial services for John will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 2, 2107, at St. James Episcopal Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Terry Kleven officiating.
Burial of his ashes will be in Forest Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa Public Library in John’s name.
